How has charging worked in the other countries of the UK?

Customers have quickly got used to the charge and significantly reduced the number of carrier bags they use. In Wales, where a 5p charge has been in place since October 2011, demand for single-use carrier bags fell by approximately 77 per cent in the first six months to March 2012, though we still sold over three million bags and raised nearly £140,000 for charity. In total our Welsh stores have raised £1,069,000 for good causes over the four years to September 2015, while the more recent charges in Northern Ireland (introduced April 2013) and Scotland (introduced October 2014) have raised £480,000 and £362,000 respectively.
